About the Prison Doula Project

Prison Doula Project

Only two states have currently passed laws that protect female prisoners' rights by prohibiting guards from shackling their ankles during labor, delivery, and transport to and from the medical facility.  All other states (including NC) allow SHACKLED BIRTH!

The "Peace Tree Prison Doulas" are group of volunteer doulas who wish to serve incarcerated women in  North Carolina penitentaries. We are working to offer two main services to these women; each week we will facilitate a pregnancy, labor and postpartum discussion group based on the womens'  interests and needs, as well as provide continuous birth doula support, when these women go into labor.  After delivery, we will provide continuous postpartum counseling and breastfeeding support.
